Connecting what students learn in school with the real world in a variety of ways, including job-shadowing, volunteering and paid positions. It helps prepare students for the workplace through hands-on experiences. These opportunities are offered to all high school students.

Dual Credit and Exploratory Programs

Dual Credit courses and programs that allow students to participate in post-secondary learning with the support of a supervising CBE teacher. Exploratory programs that allow students to gain practical, hands-on learning experiences from industry experts.

Visit the CBE Unique Pathways & Off-campus Education website for review the opportunities that will be available for Winter / Semester 2. Note that applications for Winter (Semester 2) programs will not be available until October.

Registered Apprentice Program – RAP

The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is designed for high school students who want to begin training in a trade of their choice, work towards becoming an indentured apprentice, and earn credits toward their high school diploma. The RAP program allows students to earn high school credits, while employed as apprentices in one of Alberta’s 52 certified trades.

Careers: The Next Generation is non-profit organization is dedicated to offering students the opportunity to explore a career in the skilled trades. They work to locate potential work-sites/employers for our students. Potential apprentices wishing to be a RAP student, are encouraged to find a suitable job with a journeyman willing to apprentice them.

Most students begin RAP during the summer of Grade 10 or 11 year as 16 years of age is a requirement of most programs

Step 1 - Research Trades

  • Go to the Apprentice Industry Training Alberta "Designated Trades Profile List" for an overview and description of industry and trade options 
  • Careers: The Next Generation is also a good source of information for potential trades.
  • You need to do some research and think about area(s) you are most interested in.

Step 2 - Meet With Guidance

  • Meet with your Guidance counselor and discuss whether the RAP program is a good fit for your graduation plan.
  • Discuss potential changes to your high school schedule 

Step 3 - Register and then complete Online Workplace Safety Course HCS3000

  • Go to www.OnlineLogin.ca
  • Click the green button “Enter Code”
  • Enter activation code that you receive from guidance
  • Register your information and be sure to write down your USERNAME & PASSWORD after registering
  • It is a good idea to logoff and then login from scratch using your new username and password to ensure everything works correctly
  • Complete online course requirements'

Step 4 - Find an Employer

  • Potential RAP students, are encouraged to find a suitable job with a journeyman willing to apprentice them.
  • You may have a connection with an employer directly OR
  • Register through CAREERS: The Next Generation to sign up and be linked with potential employers/opportunities

Step 5 - Meet with Off-Campus Coordinator

  • Your off-campus coordinator will give you the required paperwork to complete which includes Teacher and Off-Campus Education Coordinator recommendation.
  • Your off-campus coordinator will arrange a visit with your potential employer


Work Experience

In Grade 11 and 12 students who have jobs or a volunteer position may use their experience to earn credit toward graduation (some conditions apply).

Step 1 - Meet with Guidance

  • QUESTION: Do you require Work Experience Credits as part of your graduation plan?
  • You can work with guidance to ensure that this is the right program considering your graduation plan.
  • Guidance will communicate student intentions with Work Experience Coordinators

Step 2 - Register and then complete Online Workplace Safety Course HCS3000

  • Go to www.OnlineLogin.ca
  • Click the green button “Enter Code”
  • Enter activation code that you receive from guidance
  • Register your information and be sure to write down your USERNAME & PASSWORD after registering
  • It is a good idea to logoff and then login from scratch using your new username and password to ensure everything works correctly
  • Complete online course requirements

Step 3 - Meet with Off-Campus Coordinator

  • Ensure you have successfully completed the HCS3000 course with a grade of 70% or higher
  • Meet with the school's Off-Campus Coordinator to proceed
  • During WELL time, speak with Mr. Daniel (Rm 323) or Mr. Sagriotis (Main Office) about next steps

Step 4 - Complete Required Paperwork with Employer

  • Your off-campus coordinator will give you paperwork to complete
  • Your off-campus coordinator will arrange a visit of your job site

Step 5 - Begin Logging Work Experience Hours

  • Your first 75 hours = 3 credits in your grade level
  • Every additional 25 hours = 1 additional credit
